This Is How Cold Winters Can Have an Impact on Your Trees

Residents of Columbus, OH know all about the impact of winter. This is one part of the country that gets lots of ice and snow. The colder weather can also have an effect on all of the trees on your Columbus, OH property. It’s important to know the signs that your trees might have a problem affecting their health.

Falling Tree Branches

One of the most common problems during the winter is falling tree branches. Snow and ice are very heavy. Even a single coating of ice on your trees can lead to lots of branches breaking off and falling down. A prolonged ice storm or blizzard might leave your trees vulnerable to even more damage. This is why you want to have our trained arborists at your side for assistance. In the event of dangerous falling tree branches, we can be at your service with immediate emergency help.

Frost Cracking

Winter precipitation primarily consists of ice and snow. Both ice and snow cause water to expand. Expanding water poses a hazard for your Columbus, OH trees. That’s because the freezing water can cause parts of the trees to crack. As it does, the tree can have areas that have split open. This is particularly true for your younger trees that don’t have highly established root systems. Help them endure the colder weather by wrapping the base this winter.

Winter Drought

Columbus, OH gets an average of 22 inches of snow each winter. However, there are times when the region may get less precipitation than normal. This type of weather is known as a winter drought. This common condition can make it hard for your trees to thrive. Your trees can literally lose water because they are unable to draw moisture from the frozen ground. Your evergreen trees are particularly vulnerable to this issue, so it’s important to pay close attention to them each winter.

Sunscald

Just like humans, trees can get sunburned. This can happen when your trees get a lot of sun on a sunny winter day, which causes dormant cells within the tree to become active. When the temperature drops back below freezing, these cells can be damaged because they lack the cold hardiness needed to handle the temperature drop. If your trees have been sunscalded, you might see deep cracks when you look at the outer bark of your trees. The same is true of the inner wooded areas. Deciduous trees with thin bark are most susceptible to sunscald, but you can easily prevent it by having their trunks and lower branches wrapped prior to winter.
