Here’s Why It Can Be Important to Remove Stumps

Tree removal in Ohio isn’t always necessarily paired with stump removal. These tasks require different tools, so it makes sense that when trees are cut down, their stumps are often left behind. At first, it might not seem like that big of a deal to leave a stump in your yard, but it could actually be a much smarter decision to have that stump removed.

Not Pretty to Look At

At Bluegrass Tree & Lawn, one of the primary reasons we’re called out to remove stumps in the Columbus, OH area is that they’re not attractive. A lush green lawn can be interrupted by an unsightly stump, and if you have an area that’s populated with many trees, the stumps can affect the woody feel of the property. If you’re dealing with landscaping problems due to leftover tree stumps, it could be a wise idea to call for professional assistance.

Potential Tripping Hazards

Beyond not looking very good, stumps can be hazards. If you’re ever walking around your yard or have children who may run around, stumps can be tripping hazards. Stumbling over a stump can result in a painful injury. Plus, if you’re thinking about the safety of people who may be visiting your place, there would also be a liability issue.

A Nice Home for Pests and Fungi

Tree stumps are great places for little critters to call home. Termites, ants, beetles, and other insects are often attracted to old tree stumps. Once they’re in, they’re difficult to get rid of. Their colonies may start to spread to healthy trees nearby, or they could even start to get into your home. Further, old stumps can harbor fungi. Certain types of fungi are dangerous to ingest, and if there are pets and/or small children in the home, this could be a major concern.

Susceptible to Disease

Columbus is a great environment for a range of tree species, including hickory, maple, and Ohio buckeye. Unfortunately, many trees in Columbus are cut down because of damage related to disease. Even stumps that aren’t attached to growing trees anymore, can still have those disease issues. If left untreated, the disease could spread to nearby plant life.

Potential for Regrowth

New growth can sometimes spring out of tree stumps. This is a nuisance, and if the suckers start to grow quickly, they could look gangly and unhealthy. You may periodically have to cut them back unless you end up removing the whole stump.

At Bluegrass Tree & Lawn, we’re here to help anyone in the Columbus area. Tree stumps, in addition to being an eyesore, can actually pose problems for several reasons. It may be best to just remove a stump completely so that you don’t have to worry about any risks. Call us to schedule an appointment or ask us any questions.
